Last Monday, February 9, Centinelas held a new edition of its Centinelas Breakfasts, conceived as a space for reflection and dialogue on current international issues, in an atmosphere that fosters the exchange of ideas among attendees.
On this occasion, the meeting included Pablo Díez, Head of International Affairs for the newspaper ABC, and correspondent in Asia since 2005, who gave a presentation focusing on his over twenty years of experience as a journalist in China. His presentation allowed attendees to gain a deep and nuanced understanding of the Asian giant from both a professional and personal perspective.
During the conversation, key issues related to Chinese society, its thought model, and structural differences compared to Western societies were addressed. Likewise, reflection was given to the impact that the absence of religiosity can have on the social and cultural configuration of a country, as well as how these elements influence the worldview and collective decision-making.
Another central theme was the management of the COVID-19 pandemic in China, analyzing how the health crisis was handled internally and how Western societies' responses were perceived from the Asian country. These reflections served to highlight the divergences between political and social models in situations of global crisis.
Finally, a deeper dive was taken into Xi Jinping's regime, the functioning of the Chinese political system, and the particularities of the business model in China, key aspects for understanding the country's growing role on the international stage.
Overall, the meeting was highly enriching, transporting attendees to the Chinese context and contributing to a comprehensive vision of the Asian giant.
